Hornby Britannia 4-6-2 Completes 100 Real Miles of Reliable Service.

Since the Famous Trains model railway first opened to the public in April 2013, our Hornby Britannia 4-6-2, which we have numbered 70004 William Shakespeare, has pulled our Palatine express train for over 100 real miles. This 00-scale model locomotive has performed faultlessly. It runs quietly, is a very good runner at all speeds and can still haul its eight-coach train at high speed when required.

What amazes our members is that this model has received little or no maintenance since its introduction into service on our railway. It just keeps going! This is a most impressive performance.

In real life, the original 70004 William Shakespeare came to the London Midland Region after several years on the Southern Region hauling trains such as the Golden Arrow out of London Victoria. We have a 1960 photograph of 70004 pulling the Palatine train out of Millers Dale station on its way from Manchester Central to London St. Pancras. This is the picture at the head of this web page. The Palatine ran once a day each way; the morning train started from London, and returned from Manchester in the late afternoon.

In our Palatine train now are six carriages from the low-cost Hornby Railroad range, and two Bachmann-made catering coaches. All are arranged with close couplings for realism, and all have the correct carriage destination boards on them.

We look for ideas as to how best to celebrate our model's superb achievement!
