The Great Gathering...In A Display Case

In 2013, the National Railway Museum (NRM) and the modelmaker Hornby were in the initiative in bringing all six surviving Gresley A4 class Pacific locomotives together in one place.

To achieve this, two of these 4-6-2s had to be brought from the USA and Canada, Nos. 60008 Dwight D Eisenhower and 60010 Dominion of Canada ; they travelled 2,500 miles by sea to reach the UK.

Both were repainted before they could be exhibited, 60008 in BR green and 60010 converted to a single chimney, fitted with full depth side valances and renumbered 4489 in LNER garter blue.

From their various locations in the UK came 60009 Union of South Africa in BR green, 4464 Bittern in LNER garter blue, 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley in BR lined blue (1949) livery and 4468 Mallard in LNER garter blue.

The exhibition in York in July and August was swamped with visitors, as again was the NRM’s Shildon museum when they were exhibited there in September and October. The NRM estimates that The Great Gathering attracted about half a million visitors!

Our Life Member Ken Wood has presented to Famous Trains his presentation case of the six A4s in OO-scale as produced in a limited edition by Hornby. Ours is No.150 of just 500 produced. This case is now on public display inside the Famous Trains model railway building. We thank Ken very much indeed for his generous gift.
